Sir John Stafford Raffles



A British historian and humanist who has served as the Governor-General in Java (1811). Very impressed with Javanese culture eventually fell in love with Bali. But hopes for a "working" Bali (and Indonesia) failed because the government did not want to quarrel with
Netherlands. He wanted to build a city of Singapore in Buleleng, but the king of Buleleng not agree.
Disappointed in Bali (Indonesia) he developed the city (port) Singapore 1819. While growing in Buleleng town called Lovina is not Singapore.

During the Napoleonic Wars, when the East Indies were occupied by the English Briefly, a British military mission was sent to Bali.Sir Stamford Raffles, who would establish the colony of Singapore in 1819, visited Bali in 1814. Rumors Circulated the English were about to take possession of Bali, intent on building a second Singapore. The Dutch, believing the English sought to OBTAIN control over the archipelago's rice trade, started their own colonial adventure in Bali.
